One of the most magical things for children is to see their favourite characters from books and TV come to life in front of their eyes. There are many opportunities to see children’s characters in the UK and so here are some of the best places to visit to really capture your youngster’s imagination!
See Peter Rabbit in the Lake District
Almost everyone has read the books about Peter Rabbit and his fury friend’s adventures at some point in their lives. If you are visiting the Lake District it is a great opportunity to learn more about Beatrix Potter, her life and the wonderful characters that she created. Beatrix Potter wrote most of her stories at Top Farm near Ambleside. When she died she left it to the National Trust and today you can visit the six small rooms that Beatrix Potter called her home for many years.
Young children will love visiting the World of Beatrix Potter Attraction at Bowness-on-Windermere, in the Lake District where you can see the stories brought to life, visit Peter Rabbit’s Garden and purchase Peter Rabbit toys in the gift shop as a perfect reminder of your trip. Afterwards be sure to treat yourself to a lovely cake in the tea shop accompanied by a pot of tea.
Imagine Postman Pat in his red van in the Lake District
Postman Pat has been a children’s favourite for the last thirty years, but you will need a bit of imagination. The fictional village of Greendale where most of the stories are set is based on the village of Longsleddale in Cumbria so take a trip there and imagine Mrs. Goggins behind the counter in her post office and Pat driving round the windy lanes in his van with Jess that black and white cat. There is even a plaque about Postman Pat outside the post office. Unfortunately, the post office is no longer open so you will need a little bit of make believe! So take a holiday to a Lake District cottage and keep a look out for postman pat, his red van and his back and white cat!
See Thomas the Tank Engine at Llangollen
One of the most magical things for children (and parents alike!) is to see Thomas the Tank Engine steam train pull into the station in all his glory. Thomas often pays a visit to Llangollen Railway Station in North Wales and it is a truly fantastic day out for any Thomas fans. Sir Topham Hatt (the former Fat Controller) is on the platform making sure that everything runs smoothly and there are usually some troublesome trucks and carriages to be seen too. It’s a great day out and there are usually activities on the platform too like free stickers, balloon modelling and painting. Plus you can go for a short ride on Thomas into the Welsh countryside!
