This is a guest post from our friend Jill Landeryou at Latitude 50, who offer luxury self catering cottages in Rock, Port Isaac and Polzeath in Cornwall.

If you’re planning a break to Cornwall this summer and love to walk, the county has lots to offer: from ancient religious routes, to walks on wild Bodmin moor, trips along the coast path and inland trails through stunning bluebell woods, Cornwall has walks for all abilities and ages. So if you’re keen to find out more, but don’t know where to begin, read on… you’ll be itching to pick up your walking boots and set off on an adventure before you know it!

The Saints Way – A Trail from Padstow to Fowey

Padstow – where the trail begins

This well signed route leads you across 27 miles of magical Cornish countryside from Padstow, on the Atlantic north coast, to Fowey on the south coast. The trail leads along the probable route of early Christian travellers who would have been making their way from Ireland to Brittany and the rest of Europe. The walk begins in the picturesque fishing town of Padstow where celebrity chef Rick Stein has a number of restaurants and shops, where you can pick up some treats for your walk. After leaving Padstow the trail then heads south through the village of Little Petherick, onto St Breock Downs and Lanivet to meet the Fowey River. It then leads onwards, with a lovely stretch following the course of the river all the way to Fowey itself. See the Visit Cornwall website for a map of the route and further details.

Bodmin Moor – An Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty

Covering an area of almost 200 square km Bodmin Moor is a huge expanse of spectacular terrain, affording many opportunities for fantastic walks. The moor itself is a vast grassy expanse, dotted with clusters of heather and granite outcrops ranging in sizes. You will find many plants and wildlife there, with the changing seasons ensuring that no two walks are ever the same. Bodmin is so enjoyable for its sense of remoteness and its authentic feeling of being a place of true wilderness. There are a number of paths and trails to choose from which make it a great haven for walkers. See the Bodmin website for more details.

Standing Stones on Bodmin Moor
Sir John Betjeman Walk, Wadebridge

This family friendly route, of just less than 4 miles, leads walkers along a truly beguiling stretch of the Southwest Coast path. The trail passes through golden sand dunes and along some of Cornwall’s most impressive beaches, whilst also passing St Enodoc Church, which sits overlooking Daymer Bay. Once at the church you can visit the grave of Poet Laureate Sir John Betjeman before continuing on your way.

Sir John Betjeman’s Headstone at St Enodoc Church

The walk then reaches Brea Hill, famous for being the home of a Bronze age burial site and continues to loop back round to its starting point in Wadebridge. This is a gentle walk that is suitable for all ages, with plenty of interest along the way. See the Southwest Coast Path website for further details.
Tehidy Country Park, Cambourne

Tehidy country park covers over 250 acres and consists of stunning mixed woodland (the largest in West Cornwall), a picturesque lake and around 9 miles of well cared for, marked walking paths. Each path leads you you on a unique journey, through some truly magical Cornish countryside and there is also a visitors centre and cafe to enjoy. The estate was once owned by the Basset family, who gained their considerable wealth through mining and the mineral trade, but is now in the care of Cornwall County Council. History enthusiasts may wish to visit the Basset Memorial which stands inland at Carn Brea, commemorating the life of Sir Francis Basset, who lived from 1757 – 1835. At this time of year Tehidy also boasts an impressive display of bluebells – which makes a visit even more of a delight. See the Cornwall Council website for more details.

Tehidy Bluebells

When it comes to walking in Cornwall these 4 walks really are just the beginning – there are many other fantastic walks to discover for yourself and so many active things to do in Cornwall. So, what are you waiting for? Get out there and see what wonderful sights you can find on a lovely walk in Cornwall…

The more adventurous among us will already be familiar with Machu Picchu and the Inca Trail, built in the 15th century. This is probably one of the most famous sites in Peru that attracts tourists from all over the world.

Beyond that though not many people know much about the country. Peru, located in South America is a Spanish speaking country and it’s closest neighbors are Ecuador, Columbia, Brazil and Bolivia.

The capital city of Peru is Lima. This is likely the city you will fly into when you arrive in the county and is home to many wonderful hotels with lots of things to do. You can find everything you want in Peru, you have mountains, beach, jungle, a mix of everything, hot weather, cold weather, natural area, cities etc, it is a truly exciting and beautiful place.

It is a shame that Peru has been so low down on many peoples preferred destinations, recently, however, the Peruvian government has created a strong brand campaign, Marca Peru. In a society where we see lots of countries promoting themselves, it’s very rare to see something “different” when it comes to a countries self-promotion.

If you watch the video below, I think you’ll agree that the Peruvian government has done a great job of capturing how wonderful Peru is, while delivering a strong brand message and memorable logo. I’ve certainly been won over by this campaign and would love to go there myself sometime soon!

Are you looking to get away from the usual river cruise tourist destinations and get off the beaten track, escaping to something a bit different? Well then, Viking river cruises could be the ideal choice for you. They offer to provide you with a trip that is like no other, visiting destinations that are a little more unusual and exciting.

River Cruising In Russia

One of the more popular options available is river cruising in Russia. Russia has a vast history and culture just waiting to be awakened with a river cruise. Seen from the perspective of the rivers, there simply isn’t a better way to explore the architecture and experience a different view other than with a river cruise.

Waterways Of The Tsars

With this route you should be able to indulge in the extensive delights that two of Russia’s great cities have to offer. Visiting Moscow and St. Petersburg, this Viking river cruise will tour such landmarks as Moscow’s Kremlin and Red Square, also visiting Catherine’s Palace and the Hermitage in St. Petersburg.

What about the idea of escaping the beaten track, I hear you cry? Well, this trip also seeks to see another side of Russia by visiting quaint riverside towns such as Yarloslav, Uglich and Mandrogy, that only a river cruise can take advantage of.

River Cruising In Ukraine And The Footsteps Of The Cossacks

Another great and unusual river cruise is that of a voyage through Ukraine, a journey through time. This trip is comprised of exploring the famous cities of Odessa, Yalta Kiev, also taking in scenery and towns full of tradition along the Dnieper River.

See how civilisations including the Vikings, Tatars and Cossacks have influenced the architecture, cuisine and culture of modern Ukraine. Take a journey to landmarks like the Livadia Palace, site of the 1945 Yalta Conference, Odessa’s Potemkin Steps and Kiev’s Monastery of Caves, immersing yourself in Cossack customs in Zaporozhye.

Testimonials

If you find that you’re still unsure of these more unusual trips then be sure to refer to some river cruise testimonials. These testimonials will prove a valuable resource in understanding the nature of the trip. Learn from people’s experiences and get a better idea of what to expect so that you can make an informed decision on whether this is right for you. Overall, find out what’s included on a Viking cruise, you’ll see exactly why you won’t be disappointed.

Just like many in their 50s, my holidays generally revolve around exploring new cultures, sights and sounds – something which often makes its difficult to know what to pack. As we get older, it’s wise to follow a few handy tips when it comes to knowing what to take.

Plan an itinerary

The majority of us in our 50s prefer filling our days with guided tours as opposed to lounging by the pool. With this in mind, it’s important to have a number of city guides at hand. If you intend on visiting a variety of destinations in the one trip, opt for a video guide instead. Lugging around several hardback guides will only make your suitcase a little on the heavy side.

Choose your footwear wisely

If you propose to trek up the side of a mountain, over narrow cobbled streets or through a deep jungle, packing comfortable footwear is a must. It is also important to pack a pair of jelly shoes for paddling. Both sharp rocks and sea urchins can cause nasty cuts.

Travel insurance

It’s surprising how many Britons in their later years lack medical cover abroad when in actual fact it is probably our age group that needs it the most. A small trip or fall could lead to a nasty knee or hip injury and without insurance; medical treatment could cost a minimum of £500.

There are a variety of insurance providers to choose from, many of which offer both single trip cover and annual insurance policies. If you travel on a regular basis, it may be more cost-effective to invest in an annual policy.

Other features you should look at include the availability of mobility aids in your destination. Just as you may have used a video guide to choose the perfect stairlift for your home, you need to research what facilities are available at your destination.

Your phone book

For those of us that still refuse to get to grips with technology, packing your phonebook is a must, even if it’s just to let friends and family know that you have arrived safely. Knowing you have these numbers at hand will also allow for peace of mind.

Prepare documentation

If you plan on staying in more than just the one hotel, ensure you have the names and addresses of each establishment handy. If you are visiting a remote location and booked online, finding an Internet connection to pull up these details may be near impossible.

If you require special assistance or have certain dietary requirements, ensure that you have made these requests clear to both the airline and any hotels you plan on staying in. If you have an allergy to the likes of nuts or a type of medication, wear a bracelet that informs others of this. If you end up having to seek medical advice in a foreign country you may find such allergies difficult to explain to those that don’t speak English.

It’s finally arrived. Summer is here. Our days can at last be filled with barbeques, picnics in the park and of course, planning where to go on our summer holidays.

Choosing the right holiday destination is a priority for many of us, particularly because a summer vacation is the one time every year that is dedicated to relaxing and spending time with friends or family. With so many stunning countries to visit across the globe, it can be a challenge choosing an area that is interesting, appeals to everyone and gives a well-deserved break. When picking a holiday destination, many people automatically think of the sun, sea and sand in places like the Mediterranean or the Caribbean. However, there is so much to see and do across our planet. For this reason, an increasing number of people are looking for more unusual travel options to countries that are less explored. Whether it’s hiking in the Himalayas or sightseeing in Saigon, more of us want to experience the different cultures and natural wonders that the world has to offer.

One of the best ways of doing this is to take a cruise holiday. Onboard a ship, the world is essentially your oyster. You have the opportunity of easily visiting a number of countries or areas from the comfort of a luxury ship, which can be difficult to do if you travel by air. Cruises often also appeal because of the onboard facilities. With restaurants, pools and entertainment areas to choose from, sightseeing can take a priority on land whilst relaxing can be done offshore. There is a huge range of unusual cruises to choose from, but they do take a bit of research. Listed below are some top tips for choosing a holiday with a difference.

Where to look:

Going online is one of the best ways of searching for unusual cruises with a difference. There are sites that are dedicated to doing choosing research into what cruise journeys are available in a number of countries. Blogs can also be helpful in inspiring you with regards to what countries to visit; seeing pictures and reading expert opinions are a great way of knowing what to expect.

Where to go:

When the phrase ‘unusual cruise holiday’ is said, many imagine exploring unchartered waters in tropical locations. While this is certainly possible (the Mekong river cruises through South Asia are renowned for being extraordinary), there are many other options too. Holidaymakers can take cruise trips to Africa or even to the North Pole, so it is worth investigating what options are available.

What to do:

While spending time on the cruise ship is a big part of taking a cruise holiday, what appeals to most people is the ability to do a huge range of sightseeing and activities in a short space of time. Taking day trips to the shore is usually the highlight of holidaymakers’ journeys, and are even more so on more exotic holidays. For North Pole expeditions, cruise goers can spot wildlife and stand ‘at the top of the world’. For those going on cruises to the Middle East, visiting sites that are thousands of years old is possible as well as visiting some of the world’s most beautiful beaches. Going online to see what activities are available for the cruise you eventually choose is a good idea, as you certainly don’t want to miss out on anything.

These are just a few top ideas to keep in mind whilst planning your summer holiday. Cruises are a fantastic way of exploring the world’s most stunning and unusual sites, so it is a good idea to investigate what is available to you. With such a range to choose from, there is guaranteed to be something to suit everyone.

France’s second city after its capital Paris, Nice is most famous for its extraordinary food culture and because of its location it is easy to see why. Surrounded by the fruit, vegetables and olive oil of Provence who are also specialist producers of meat and due to its position by the sea, fish. It would hardly be surprising then that Nice could such a great place for food fanatics.

The Markets of Nice

While it is not technically a tourist attraction in Nice, many travellers who come to the city make their first stop off at the market in Cours Saleya making it an unintentional attraction. Like the similar fruit and vegetable market in Antibes this is a full functioning working market which is frequented by the locals and restaurants to stock up on supplies. The best way to see the market is to go on a walking tour around the market.

There is also a fish market a short distance away from Cours Saleya at Place Saint Francois and is an eye opener for those who thought they knew all about fish. It is open from 6 am till 1 pm daily except on Mondays.

Places to Enjoy Local Flavours

With Nice being such a great place to eat some great cuisine you will find no greater pleasure while in the city than eating the local dishes prepared by the knowledgeable chefs who have been preparing this kind of food for much of their lives.

The Cours Saleya market is a great place to find some locally prepared dishes and as are the little streets of the Old Town where you can treat yourself to little pancakes called socca, which is a thin pancake made with olive oil, chickpea flour and then seasoned with black pepper.

Other dishes you should try include pissaladiere which is a pizza like onion tart and beignets de fleurs de courgettes which are deep friend fritters in olive oil with vegetables. All of these specialities which are certain to delight your taste buds can be found at stalls and local restaurants.

Learning to Cook

If you really wish to take home with you some techniques to make some Nicois recipes book a day at the Les Petits Farcis. Cordon Bleu trained owner Rosa Jackson takes you on a tour of the open air market at Cours Saleya where she will introduce you to some of her favourite producers there and for the food buffs is the kind of inside knowledge that they would normally only dream of.

You will shop then learn to cook your ingredients in true Nice style before tasting what you have all made. It is a fun and relaxing way to introduce yourself to Nicois cooking. Be sure to check out great deals for car rentals at Auto Europe to drive into Nice and begin your food quest.

Wine Bars

Any food buff knows that a good choice of wine will compliment your meal to make it the perfect dish. Once you have learned to cook you can visit one of the wine bars in the city and ask the knowledgeable sommeliers about wine. Unlike in other countries you will be expected to order food with your wine although the menus in these bars are less formal than in restaurants.

Tenerife is a great destination for a holiday thanks to its amazing ability to offer something for everyone. Should you wish to travel to a place where you can relax on a beautiful beach all day or go hiking up to the top of a volcano, then Tenerife can cater for that. For those who want to find some of the best sites Tenerife has to offer, this guide will endeavour to give you some ideas.

Mount Teide

Look up from any point of Tenerife and you will see Mount Teide somewhere in the skyline. The highest peak in Spain reaching 3,718 metres, it is home in the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Parque Nacional Del Teide. Getting to the park is fairly easy as you can pick up a free map and rent a car for relatively cheap. If you do not wish to drive yourself take one of the coach day trips there.

Entry to the park and to the base of the volcano is free and the landscape is stunning. From there you can explore the park or pay to take the cable car up to the peak of the mountain which offers you some spectacular views of the surrounding islands. If you choose to stay at the base make sure you visit the free visitors’ centre which is well worth a visit.

The Beach

While this is an obvious attraction of any island that is well known for its beautiful beaches, there are some cases where people avoid the beaches because of the islands black sand. The black sand is a natural feature of the islands volcanic past and you can also find plenty of superb beaches with soft golden sands and clear turquoise waters.

One such beach with golden sands is Las Vistas which is the biggest beach in the Los Critianos area and is manmade. For those who are not afraid of visiting a black sand beach then head over to El Medano which is a long lat beach which is also a favourite amongst surfers as the winds can sometimes pick up. Be sure to check out cheapflights.co.uk for the best deals on your flights when you are planning on travelling to Tenerife.

Siam Park

This water park has a heavy Thai tone to its architecture and is widely regarded as a world class tourist attraction since it has brought the best water rides from around the world to one place. The design of the park was given approval by the royal family of Thailand and you will be transported to a Thai like world almost as soon as you step through the door and face the floating village made from Thai imported wood.

One of the best rides in the park is the Tower of Power in which you hurtle down a slide vertically and pass through a shark tank around half way down. If all of this gets too much for you then you can take the opportunity to relax on a rubber ring as you float down the Mai Thai River or even stop off and relax on one of the many sun loungers. The park is also home to the biggest wave machine in the world.

There is no denying that city breaks are a great way of making the most of your free time, and experiencing another culture to boot. Though some of the top city destinations are a touch on the pricey side, there are still plenty of cities where your pound will buy you plenty of riches.

So here are the top picks where you are guaranteed to have a great time without coming home in the red.

Prague

Thanks to its winding streets and gothic architecture, Prague makes a great destination for a city break. Add to that cheap food/drinks and good value accommodation and you’ve got yourself a top weekend away.

To find the cheapest deals, book your flights and accommodation together. Or book low cost flights and then look into hiring a cheap holiday apartment or even youth hostel accommodation.

Krakow

Krakow city holiday

This beautiful city was overlooked by western tourists for years as they were unaware of the treasures that it had to offer. However, the secret is now well and truly out, so expect to bump into a few other visitors as you stroll around town. Cheap accommodation is available throughout most of the central districts, and most hostels are also very reasonably priced.

If you want cheap eats, it doesn’t come much cheaper than the delicious Zapekanka, Poland’s answer to pizza, which can be picked up on most street corners for around 50p.

Berlin

Look in the right places, and there are few western European destinations which are cheaper than Berlin.

Hire an apartment or book a room in a hostel and you’re unlikely to pay more than 10-15 euros a night. Even in the city centre a beer will set you back just 2.50-3 Euros and the tasty kebabs, ubiquitous in every district, will cost you about the same price.

Istanbul

Though not traditionally considered a cheap city, a break in Istanbul really doesn’t have to cost much.

Hire a holiday apartment for the best value accommodation and spend your days wondering the maze of streets that make up this incredible city. Cheap food can be found on the shores of the Bosphorus, where fishermen grill up their fresh catches and serve them in spiced bread for around £2.

There are some great affordable city breaks with Superbreak available throughout Europe, so now is the perfect time to jet off for a weekend adventure.

Whether you’re holidaying in the beautiful beach towns of Southern France or the postcard-perfect Baltic coastline, one of the most important accessories for a great summer holiday is a pair of sunglasses.

Sunglasses for on holiday

From affordable chic to designer style, sunglasses run the gamut in terms of price and quality. £10 shades often look just as good as their £100 counterparts, making picking the perfect pair of shades for your holiday a very difficult decision indeed.

So, which is it? Cheap or quality? Costly and stylish or affordable and stress-free? If you’re having trouble picking out the ideal pair of sunglasses for this summer, keep reading to learn about the pros and cons of cheap and costly sunglasses.

Designer Shades: When are they the best choice?

While cheap shades are often enough for a low budget beach holiday, there are some situations where nothing but the best will do. If you’re holidaying in a great location – a St. Tropez type beach town where looks and status are everything – it’s essential that you have the shades to match the rest of your styling.

Just like nightclub bouncers look at shoes to judge a person’s spending power, your sunglasses say a lot about your status. Pick a pair that’s chic and stylish, but not too expensive looking, and you’ll score the ultimate summer fashion statement.

It’s also worth noting that there’s more to high-end sunglasses than just the stylish designs. While cheap sunglasses can look good, they’re often made from low quality materials that might not even last for the duration of your holiday.

Designer shades, ideal for: high-end beach holidays in top locations, clubbing trips to destinations where style is a priority, big cities where cosmopolitan fashion asks for the best, and any holiday where photography is the name of the game.

Cheap Sunglasses: When are they appropriate?

While expensive shades often look incredible, they have a number of downsides. As well as their immense prices – some sunglasses can cost more than £400 – they’re a major risk for travellers prone to misplacing their shades at the worst of times.

If you’ve ever left your sunglasses in a hotel room, on a beachside dining table, or in the backseat of a taxi, you’ll know the pain it can cause. For holidays where you’ll be rushed from one adventure to the next, it’s often better to sacrifice the designer shades for a pair of more affordable sunglasses.

This is particularly true if you’re going on a beach holiday to a destination where exclusive style isn’t expected. From Turkey’s beach resorts to Spain’s islands, the importance of style can rapidly disappear when temperatures start to soar.

Cheap sunglasses, ideal for: destinations where style isn’t a priority, beaches where sunglasses are likely to be lost, adventure holidays where your shades could end up broken in two pieces, and any trip that calls for disposable, inexpensive clothing.

At the end of the day, the choice is up to you. For the ultimate in sunglasses styling, try a combination of the two: a pair of high-end sunglasses for exclusive trips, and a cheap, disposable pair for adventures where chic style isn’t so important.

Known for its dramatic scenery, Scotland is also home to some of the UK’s most incredible natural wildlife. From incredible inland birds to sea life, Scotland is a dream destination for animal lovers seeking a look at some of the most diverse, unique, and interesting creatures in Europe.

From peregrine falcons to kingfishers, Scotland’s inland and sea birds are an incredible sight

Scotland’s Incredible Sea Life

Up to two metres long and almost 300 kilograms in bodyweight, the grey seal is one of Scotland’s most recognizable marine animals. Home to around 40 percent of the world’s total grey seal population, Scotland’s rugged western coastline is the ideal location to spot this unique and interesting sea mammal.

Minke whales, a seven-metre long whale that lives in groups of two to four, can be seen off Scotland’s coastline. A popular attraction for tourists, minke whales can be spotted on whale watching tours, many of which depart from the Isle of Mull for a variety of offshore whale watching locales.

Scotland’s population of Atlantic salmon has made it a hotspot for fishing gurus for decades. While local ordinances designed to maintain the salmon population make catch-and-release the standard choice, guided fishing tours in some of Scotland’s best rivers are a great holiday option for passionate anglers.

Scotland’s Beautiful Inland and Sea Birds

The pink-footed goose, a common sight on Scotland’s eastern waterways, is one of the country’s most famous birds. Seen frequently between October and April, these charming birds are one of the easiest birds to spot if you’re staying close to one of Scotland’s large interior waterways.

Kingfishers are easy to spot on many of Scotland’s lakes and rivers. Drawn to still or slow-moving water, these beautiful birds are a great photography target for visitors to Scotland during the spring and summer. Despite their shy nature, they’re an easy bird to spot due to their bright colouration and iconic pointed bills.

The peregrine falcon, one of the world’s fastest birds, is alive and well in Scotland’s interior. Formerly endangered due to pesticides and other environmental dangers, the Scottish peregrine population has surged in recent years. This elegant bird can be found in Scotland’s moors, as well as alongside steep seaside cliffs.

Scotland’s Stunning Red Deer

Found as far south as the Lake District in Northwest England, red deer are easy to spot throughout the Scottish highlands. As one of the nation’s largest wild animals, spotting a red deer in the wild is a fantastic thrill that’s certainly part of the Scottish wildlife experience.

From sea life to highland mammals, one of the best ways to see Scotland’s wonderful animals in their natural environment is through coach holidays to Scotland. Enjoy an inside look into Scotland’s stunning moors, lakes, rivers, and coastal areas, as well as the huge variety of incredible wildlife that can be observed.

View some of the Lake District’s historical buildings on a tour through the region’s churches, castles, and historic structures. Whether you choose to visit the beautiful Cartmel Priory or the ruins of Kendal Castle, the Lake District’s huge assortment of historical buildings is enough to keep any history guru occupied.

Whether you’re searching for a beautiful waterfront retreat or a scenic inland home, owning your own holiday home is a fantastic experience. Surprisingly affordable, an increasing number of Britons are investing in holiday property.

Escape the hustle and bustle of city life with your own holiday home.

Their reasons for doing so are numerous, ranging from investment opportunities to the consistent fun of spending summer in a consistent, fun location. If you’re unsure about the value of a holiday home, read on to learn more about the advantages and the disadvantages of owning your holiday property.

1. Enjoy a consistent holiday destination

There’s nothing quite like the feeling of slipping into your own bed. While hotels are a convenient option, they’re rarely as comfortable – or as affordable – as staying in a personalized holiday home during your time away from work.

2. Earn money from your holiday property

Holiday homes are one of the smartest property investments that you can make. If your holiday home is located in one of the UK’s top destinations – the Lake District or Cornwall, for example – it can generate a large amount of rental income.

3. Visit some of the UK’s top destinations

From overbooked hotels to full-to-capacity serviced apartments, finding a place to stay in some of the UK’s top destinations isn’t easy. With holiday homes and lodges for sale in the Lake District and other top areas, buying a holiday property is one of the best ways to guarantee yourself a comfortable place to stay while on holiday.

Despite these obvious benefits, owning a holiday home isn’t all fun and games. While a holiday home can be a rewarding investment – both financially and personally – it does come with some risks and responsibilities.

4. Holiday homes aren’t free to maintain

While holiday homes are generally quite affordable to buy, they can often require a great deal of ongoing maintenance. If you’re renting out your holiday home for most of the year, you’ll need to prepare a budget for repairs, renovations, and park fees.

5. Holiday homes aren’t for everyone

If you love a particular part of the country – a beach retreat, a lakeside township, or a charming country village – owning a holiday home in one part of the country is an excellent decision.

However, if you like to travel to a different destination every year, owning a holiday home isn’t always the best choice. Note that this downside can be minimized with a holiday home in a popular location, which is almost always a rental success.

From coastal cottages to lakeside hotel suites, there’s no shortage of fantastic short-term break destinations in Britain. Whether you’re seeking sun and sand or a rural environment, we’re blessed with a huge range of weekend break destinations.

If you’re searching for the ultimate short-term holiday break destination, read on to learn about four of the UK’s top relaxing breaks. From upcountry retreats to coastal campgrounds, here are four of the UK’s top relaxing holiday breaks.

1. The Lake District National Park

From snowy peaks to beautiful waterfront vistas, the Lake District is home to some of the UK’s most remarkable scenery. Home to charming small towns and beautiful lakefront settlements, the Lake District is amazingly picturesque and beautiful.

Stop by in summer for a taste of the UK’s best meals, as well as a variety of beautiful walking trails. Visit in winter for a look at some of England’s most photogenic snow-covered mountains and charming winter driving routes.

2. Snowdonia National Park

Established in 1951 as Wales’s first National Park, Snowdonia National Park is one of the country’s top outdoor destinations. Enjoy a charming steam train ride across the park as you pass Snowdon, the tallest mountain in Wales.

As an area of incredible biodiversity, Snowdonia is the ideal place to spot rare birds and plant life. The park is also home to Gwyniad – a unique form of salmon that can only be found in the park’s famous Bala Lake.

3. County Antrim Coastline

One of Northern Ireland’s most remarkable natural attractions, Giant’s Causeway is easily accessible by private car from Belfast. An incredible expanse of stone pillars, this stunning natural monument is a great day trip for visitors to Northern Ireland.

Travellers seeking relaxation will enjoy the entire Antrim coast. Home to one of the country’s most remarkable roadways, County Antrim is Northern Ireland’s coastal scenery hotspot, boasting everything from rugged cliffs to fun seaside resorts.

4. The Gower Peninsula

Known for its incredible castles and beautiful beaches, there’s a reason the Gower Peninsula became the UK’s first Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. A short drive from Swansea, the region’s beaches rank amongst the finest in the United Kingdom.

From calm bays to rugged surf beaches, the Gower Peninsula is an exceptional slice of Welsh coastline. Bring your own vehicle – or rent one in Swansea – and spend the afternoon exploring its beautiful bays, sandy beaches, and charming small towns.

Let’s face it, in small cities like Barcelona with a large population, it’s hard to find a spacious place to stay, especially when it comes to hotels. Unless you’re willing to spend loads of money, you’ll probably end up in a small 30 sq m accommodation.

One of the biggest luxuries on a holiday is simply having space where you’re staying. So here are three Vacation rentals in Barcelona that are huge.

Apartment Xucla – Rambla measures in at 140 sq m (1500 sq ft) and has 3 bedrooms (two double bedrooms and three twin bedrooms). It’s located close to Las Ramblas, one of the most famous avenues in Barcelona, and costs as little as €9 per person per night (was €23 person/night).

Apartment Bailen E-2 is even bigger at 180 sq m (1940 sq ft). There is a private terrace which you can relax on, and 4 bedrooms (three double bedrooms and one single bedroom). The nearest metro station is only 1 block away.

Apartment Forum Beach is amazingly huge, with 256 sq m of space (2750 sq ft). Not only is it incredibly spacious, but there are also two private terraces. Because the apartment is on the 17th floor, there are some amazing views of the entire city and the Mediterranean Sea. The best thing is that this 4 bedroom apartment is only a 5 minute walk from the beach.

So whether you’re staying in the peaceful and tranquil area of Gracia, or the sunny and marine atmosphere of Barceloneta, you don’t have to settle for a small hotel room… Treat yourself to a bit of space instead

Scotland has one of the world’s most unique environments and landscapes. It’s the perfect destination for an active holiday all through the year, even in the middle of winter. Scotland boasts spectacular mountains, thousands of miles of stunning coastline and wonderful flowing rivers and lochs. The country is also steeped in rich and exciting history and can offer you a range of adventurous activities to fill your short break with.

Scotland has such a varied landscape that you could fit white water rafting, cycling, surfing and kayaking all into one weekend if you wanted! Below are our top 5 active break around beautiful Scotland.

West Highland Way

The West Highland Way is a 96 mile walk stretching from Milngavie to Fort William in the Highlands. This trail has been specifically designed for keen hill walkers and was opened in October 1980. The path covers a variety of historical attractions such as Conic Hill, the Devil’s Staircase and Ben Nevis and is estimated to take around a week to complete the full trail. This is a great active break for walking enthusiasts but we wouldn’t suggest it for a relaxing family holiday away as large distances need to be covered daily in order to finish the trail.

Cycling in Galloway

Galloway is the perfect location for an active cycling holiday as it houses Scotland’s intriguing Cycle Museum. A Drumlanrig blacksmith named Kirkpatrick Macmillan cycled 60 miles to Glasgow in 1842 on the first ever bicycle, which he himself invented in 1839. The museum is therefore aptly housed in the Drumlanrig Castle located in the Queensberry Estate in Dumfries and Galloway. Anybody can cycle around this area with ease as there are options for beginners’ as well as mountain biking extremists and hundreds of routes are signposted and mapped out for your cycling pleasure.

Surf in Lewis

The Island of Lewis is located in the Outer Hebrides of Scotland and offers some of the best surfing conditions in Europe. The SurfLewis surfing school is located in Stornoway and offers up a surfing experience for complete beginners through to semi-professionals just looking to hire some equipment. Lewis is a fantastic place to discover and has a thriving cultural heritage that they’re delighted to share with tourists.

Kinnaird Woodland Lodges

If you’re looking to combine an activity break in Scotland with a bit of luxury then the Kinnaird Woodland Lodges would be an ideal solution. Spend your days walking through the enchanted woodlands surrounding the property and then spend your evenings curled up by the fire or warming up in your private outdoor hot tub.

Cairngorm sled dog adventures

The only year-round daily working sled dog school in the UK is located in the Cairngorm National Park. The centre is family run and the sled dogs live and work with family in their 300 year old cottage. The ideal time to visit the centre is of course during the winter months when the snow is thick on the ground but it is open for tours year-round. The sport of dog sledding is an unforgettable and fascinating experience and is the perfect active holiday for families and dog-lovers alike.

Scotland offers all the above and much, much more and truly is an incredible place for an active holiday or weekend break. What would be your ideal active holiday in Scotland? Let us know in the comment section below.

I always intend to travel light, I imagine myself rather like an elegant Parisian, toting a suitcase as small as a petite handbag. Within it, a few carefully chosen items of clothing which will effortlessly mix and match to create the perfect ensemble for any eventuality. Practical and chic.

Actually, the opposite usually ends up being true. What happens if I *need* the diamante encrusted platform stilettos at some point during the Bruges city break? How annoyed with myself would I feel if I left the bikini at home and suddenly found a beach during the getaway? Before you know it my suitcase is bulging with so many obscure and unrelated items, it looks like I’ve packed for a schizophrenics anonymous convention.

So in an effort to scale down the suitcase squashing madness, join me on a tour of hint and tips to pack modestly.

Pile it up. Put everything you intend to pack onto your bed or table. If you pack in stages, you run the risk of forgetting what it already in the case and packing multiples of items you will only need one of.

Don’t put all your eggs in one basket. This is relevant if you’re flying as a family or couple. Make sure you put an assortment of everyone’s clothes in your suitcases rather than each person having a designated case. This way, if the worst should happen and a case gets lost, it won’t mean one person has lost all their holiday clothes, it should amount to a couple of outfits for everyone which isn’t nearly as traumatic.

Stuff shoes with socks and underwear; put the underwear in a carrier bag first to prevent any lingering foot odours transferring (bleugh!). On the subject of aroma, dryer sheets are great for popping inside suitcases to keep everything fresh as a daisy.

Roll it up. Roll items such as vest tops and shorts into sausages. These are much easier to bend into the corners of your suitcase which are usually wasted space.

Keep neutral. Take with you neutral coloured vest tops/ t-shirts which will go with anything so you don’t need one for every pair of shorts or skirt. Make your clothes earn their space!

Accessorize. Thin scarves and jewellery take up much less space in the case and can make an outfit go from day to evening. No need to pack your ballgown after all!

However, if you’re going away in the car or on the train, I would heartily recommend…….cheating! Without the worry of weight restrictions, liquids and carry-on bag dimensions (and am I allowed a handbag too?), a car is a much less restrictive mode of transport when it comes to luggage so make the most of it.

Indulge yourself and pack to your heart’s content!

Just like many other adults of my age group, childhood holidays for me were generally spent under canvas. Holidays abroad seemed to be exclusively reserved for the rich and famous, and as we were most definitely neither, my parents would religiously pack up our trailer tent at the start of August for a two-week jolly in a windswept campsite in Norfolk.

Ever since that time, camping has held a very dear place in my heart and as soon as I had children, I was keen to recreate some of these happy times for my children – much to my husband’s horror. His family were fortunate enough to have fallen into the ‘rich’ camp (pardon the pun) so summer holidays to him meant two weeks lounging outside a hotel in Spain, with the kids tucked away in a kids club. Not on my watch!

As soon as I felt my children were old enough to cope with a couple of nights sans central heating and sterilisation equipment, we packed up out clothes, torches slippers and set off on our first camping adventure. However, what I had failed to take into account was that camping as a child, and camping as an adult were two very different things. Here’s what I learnt during this time:

Pack Light

Camping should be time to enjoy the simple life, not trying to set up a second home. I quickly learnt that as a child I had never needed to wear clothes that were meticulously ironed, so I shouldn’t have worried about packing the iron and ironing board. Not even travel sized ones.

Keep Warm

Just because you tell yourself you are going on holiday, so the weather is bound to be hot and sunny, it doesn’t mean this is actually going to happen in real life, particularly if you are going camping in England where you will need to remember to bring a few layers for the evening. However if you are lucky enough to be camping in Italy, then warmth will not be a problem! Just make sure you have your swim-wear and good sun protection.

Relax the Rules

One of the things I had loved most about camping holidays when I was little, was the complete abandonment of the rules and regulations we had at home. Bedtimes became a thing of the past, and we were allowed to run around playing with our new-found friends until we dropped. Meals usually consisted of something mushy from a tin, accompanied by tinned sausages. And hygiene standards were reduced to a quick shower once a week or a wash in the washing-up sinks.

Don’t even try to stick to your usual routine when camping – throw away the rule books and have fun!

Choose Wisely

Once you’ve been on a couple of practice runs, and decide that camping holidays are for you, the world is your oyster – literally. There is a huge amount of high quality, family friendly campsites situated all over the UK and Europe that are well worth a visit this summer. Do your research and look for reviews from other campers who will tell you what the site and facilities were really like.

Have Fun

Yes, your hair will look like Kevin Keegans from the 80’s. You might not have had the best night’s sleep, and you’ll find yourself wearing strange clothing combinations like flip-flops and socks (and really not caring) but I can promise you, your children will have the best holiday of their lives. Sleeping under the stars is a completely unique experience – why not give it a go this summer?

There is plenty to do in New York and it covers all the bases in terms of the range of entertainment options on offer. The city has a strong support of sports and some of major teams in the NHL, NBA and NFL reside in the city. New York is also the host of a number of tennis tournaments, most notably the US Open. There are a number of places to play tennis throughout New York and some of them will charge fees, but you can also find some good courts for free in the five boroughs.

Before you travel to the USA you may want to purchase a prepaid currency card. ICE Travel Exchange can deliver one of these cards right to your doorstep, loaded with currency at a fantastic exchange rate.

If you plan to stay in NYC for an extended period of time you may benefit from the purchase of a permit, as some courts will require a permit and it will also expand your playing options.

Chelsea

Just south of the well known sports complex ‘Pier 40,’you will find three well maintained tennis courts which sit on the far west side of the island, offering fantastic views of the financial district and New Jersey. It’s very enjoyable to cycle to the courts via the Hudson Parkway if you are in uptown New York. You can also cycle down the east side parkway and then make the cross town transfer via 14th street. As it is a popular tennis spot, you may want to come later in the afternoon or early in the morning asyou can wait up to an hour to play for one hour, so bring a book/I Pod/Tablet to keep yourself entertained.

96th Street

These public courts reside in the upper west part of Manhattan on 96th street and inside the Hudson Riverside Park. There are now ten clay courts to keep keen tennis players entertained, but the courts can fill up fast so you may have to wait your turn. You can take the local 1 train uptown which will get you to 96th street and from there it is only a short walk to the courts. Likewise, you can cycle up the west side cycle path or cross from the east via Central Park.

Washington Market Park

This hidden gem lies in the Tribeca area of New York between Chambers street and the Manhattan Community College. This is one of the Manhattan courts which you will need a permit for, and as there is only one court available the spaces will fill up quickly. I would recommend making sure you’re the early bird by signing up ahead of time and focusing on the other enjoyable parts of your holiday.

If you would like to take advantage of some fantastic exchange rates before you go on holiday, visit ICEPlc.co.uk

Those with dreams of having a home abroad to flock to as they wish, might just be putting those plans into action in order to take advantage of both the weather and financial gains when comparing against the home equivalent.

However, there are many elements that need to be taken into consideration and you must prepare yourself for what could be a long and arduous journey to get your dream home abroad built, and built how you want it. Not only are planning and building laws different with each country, but money will be a key issue in both the planning and construction phases. Here are a few tips in how to approach the situation:

Purchasing the land

Possibly the biggest factor in building abroad is getting the permission to do so, as well as getting all the planning in order to make it run as smoothly as it can. The project will initially depend on both the quality of the land and the restrictions surrounding it.

When scoping your desired area for suitable land, ensure that you hire professionals to confirm that it is both safe and legal to build on; otherwise you might just be entering a world of hurt financially and legally if neither or both are viable.

Once happy to go ahead, hire a suitable solicitor (ideally one that speaks the local lingo) and proceed how you see fit in order to get planning and building permission. When buying the land (if necessary), you’ll probably need to dabble in a bit of international money transfers via foreign currency exchange, with bodies such as Axia-FX able to help you out in such situations.

Going through the building process

Make sure to do your research when collecting your groups of workers together that will be building your dream home abroad; look to see what their previous projects have been and how successful they are. Also look into the types of styles they are adept at creating; are they used to sticking to the general style of the area, or are they perhaps more versatile?

Finances will be big element at this stage and it is important that you are on top of your budgets, what is being spent, how much is left and how much you think you’ll need to complete the build.

Keeping an eye on the progress

Obviously you’re not going to be able to watch the house being built every day; otherwise you’ll be spending a fortune on accommodation. Therefore, look to set up regular meetings online with your contractor to get reports on the build’s progress and then fly out perhaps once a month if finances allow to get a first-hand view of how the property is coming along.

In the latter stages of the project, check with your solicitor that every legal step has been taken accordingly and that you are aware of all the procedures when moving into a foreign home, such as paying bills, tax and other elements that might be unique to your home.

Many people are happy working and living in the country in which they were born and for some, even the town that they grew up in. Some people however, have a desire to travel and finding a career which allows you to do so is easier said than done. Many of these careers won’t guarantee the opportunity to travel but specific jobs within these fields may present travelling opportunities, except for being a pilot or a flight attendant in which you’re destined to land on foreign soil most of the time.

If you happen to be setting off for the sunny shores of somewhere in Europe, then you may find that an ICE European Travel Card will help you conduct transactions in a safe and secure manner. With chip and pin technology and no conversion fees it’s a far better alternative to taking your domestic debit card abroad with you.

Teaching English as a Foreign Language

Whilst you may have never considered yourself as a teacher or the next Shakespeare, if you possess a bachelor’s degree and English is a first or fluent language, then there are usually many opportunities for you to go and teach overseas. Countries in Asia seem to have a high demand for English speaking teachers and even some countries in Europe and South America. Whilst you may not get to hop from country to country, you could easily live in five different countries or places over a ten year span and come out with not only a significant amount of professional experience but also an increased sense of ‘worldliness’.

Travel Writer

Whilst this job won’t guarantee mega money, if you manage to find a company which sponsors the transportation and budget living costs, you’re still getting to travel the world and write! If this is something you are passionate about and you aren’t money motivated, it can be a really fulfilling experience and one which may lead to you making many friends and contacts all over the world. It’s a great idea for a young aspiring writers to develop their portfolio, get by on the minimum and return to a career driven writing position with a wealth of anecdotes, an expansive portfolio and a sun tan which hopefully won’t fade too quickly.

Cruise Ship Employee

Most people go on cruises to travel and relax, but there are many seasonal workers who go on cruise ships to work and also enjoy getting glimpses of the destinations they visit on their time off. Of course, this will all depend on the job you perform on the ship and the associated pay. If you’re a performer you’ll find that you may be able to squeeze in a couple of hours of sightseeing in the day and then you’ll obviously be working at night. As cruise ships are their own special breed of entertainment you may actually find the range of working roles available is quite diverse.

Digital Nomad

This is still a relatively new term but one which will become more prominent as the digital age progresses. The main advantage of being a digital nomad is that you can make money doing freelance projects as long as you have the internet and a phone connection. If you receive payment in your domestic currency at a rate which is typical for that job then you’re likely to save money. Countries throughout Europe have higher living expenses than many other places in the world so if you can save money on your living costs in a location which is ideal for your lifestyle, then you can either return to your motherland with a sizable chunk of money, or just retire early and while away the rest of your peaceful days on a beach.

If you’re planning to go abroad soon and need some cash or a pre-paid currency card then visit ICEPlc.co.uk. You’ll be guaranteed competitive rates and a choice of over 50 currencies.
